Kv Skogskarlen

Senior Housing in Bergshamra at Brunnsviken

The Skogskarlen property is located on a scenic hill on the bay of Brunnsviken, in the Royal National City Park. The property encompasses a modernist red-brown brick building of cultural interest, constructed when Domänverket (the Swedish Forestry Service) was relocated to the site at the end of the 1960s. Solna Municipality needs to build more housing and in 2022 Marge was commissioned by Nyfosa to design a new apartment building comprising 165 senior housing units for the Skogskarlen property. As an extension of the Royal National City Park’s structure with independent building volumes in the park, the new detached volume is located north of the existing building. Adapted to the trees and the topography, the volume pushes forward through the terrain. The zigzag form reduces the scale in its immediate environment and, together with the existing building, creates framed spatialities between the buildings. By placing the former car park on the building’s ground floor natural land is freed up and new paths are formed around and through the property. The building has been designed with the ambition of developing a cohesive and strict façade while at the same time creating apartments with generous living qualities. The yellow bricks form repetitive bands that intertwine vertically and horizontally, generating a kinship with the building’s existing rational order and logic. Recessed balconies and french balconies with wrought iron railings are integrated into the pattern of the façade towards which generous window sections face. Adapting to the surroundings, respecting and managing the site’s natural values, the new building gives something back to the Royal National City Park as a recreational area for residents and passers-by.
