Katarina Hamam

Hamam

The hamam is within an existing property in Södermalm that was destroyed by fire in 2003 leaving only the outer walls behind. The exterior of the existing main building will be resurfaced to match its original state in 1881. The later additions and flame-damaged aisles are to be rebuilt in a modern design that stands in contrast to the classical architecture of the main building. The hamam consists of a private bath that has an isolated and contemplative atmosphere as well as an open public restaurant and café in the great hall where the original qualities are preserved with outlooks and direct lines of sight through the length of the building. The bathhouse is designed around an everyday pool culture that appeals to the general public and creates a common meeting place in Södermalm.
