Skellefteå resecentrum

Three Unifying Chapels for Skellefteå’s Future Travel

The proposal for the new Skellefteå Centralstation builds upon the city’s historical foundations: “the river”, “the ore”, and “the forest”. Now, “the railway” is added as a fourth pillar of growth and stability. The vision is to create a sustainable travel hub where mobility, accessibility, and service take centre stage—supported by good architecture, clear organization, and high sustainability ambitions.

The project is divided into three main parts: the western quarter with housing, bus logistics, and offices; Centralstationen with services and retail; and the eastern quarter with a mobility hub and commercial spaces. The area surrounding the station reflects the city’s dual character—urbanity to the south and nature to the north. Södra Järnvägsgatan will become a green city street with a car-free square, outdoor cafés, and play areas. North of the platforms, a stormwater park with typical local vegetation—such as marshland and pine heath —will be created, visible from a central route. Greenery is strategically placed both at ground level and across the roofscape, responding to local growing conditions, regional landscape types, and the city’s garden traditions.

Centralstation forms a clear gateway to the city. The three identity-defining “chapels” are the station’s signature elements, providing orientation from north and south, east and west. In the uninterrupted sightline from Parkbron along Stationsgatan, “the Station Chapel” stands as a focal point. “The Travel Chapel”, the station’s main building, connects the platform to street level and serves as a landmark with its tall, peaked roof. The connecting plinth opens toward the street, accommodating cafés, restaurants, and service shops.

The architectural concept is organized into three distinct layers: “the carpet”, “the plinth” and “the roof”. “The carpet” defines the site and unites interior and exterior; “the plinth” is filled with functions that enable smooth transitions and bring the city to life; and “the roof” establishes a clear identity, making the building visible within the urban landscape. Together, they create a unifying place for travellers.
