Arena Gothenburg

_Under the Same Roof

The proposal is an experience-driven urban block, designed to evolve in step with the city. It is shaped to attract visitors while enriching everyday life for passers-by and neighbours alike. Urban vibrancy, community, natural outdoor environments and long-term flexibility are balanced through adaptive transformation, reuse, circular design and ambitious climate targets. Through generous clear heights and an expressive architectural language—where, among other references, the form and expression of Scandinavium have been reinterpreted in a new design—a landmark is created that connects to the city’s cultural heritage and strengthens Gothenburg’s position as the Nordic capital of events.

One of the proposal’s most important concepts is to “preserve and renew Scandinavium.” Rather than demolishing the much-loved and culturally significant Scandinavium, the arena is integrated into the new complex, which also brings environmental benefits. “A public base for the neighbourhood” is another key element of the proposal, where a lowered plinth at the level of the surrounding buildings invites public uses through generous entrances and wide staircases. The third concept, “a signature roof park for everyone,” describes the lush roof park that clothes the arena roof. Accessible and open to the public, with the aim of restoring lost green areas to the district and thereby promoting biodiversity and facilitating stormwater management, the park is planned for year-round use. The final, and most visible, component can be described as “a tower that embraces the landscape.” The 11-storey hotel with a rooftop bar, positioned at a respectful distance from Gårda’s cultural environment, becomes—with its light, delicate expression and softly curved façade—a sculptural element in Gothenburg’s growing skyline.

The proposal has been developed together with Herzog & de Meuron within the framework of the architectural competition for Arenakvarteret in Gothenburg, with contributions from Maffeis Engineering, VOGT Landscape Architects, WSP, Tyréns, Hilson Moran and TAM Group.
