Urban Development at Every Scale
In Kockums' former industrial heartland, Varvsstaden is taking shape as a future sustainable and vibrant neighbourhood. New bridges, housing, schools and businesses will generate an active urban life, stitching together Västra Hamnen and the city centre. At the core of the area lies a remarkable collection of shipyard buildings and public spaces, now being unlocked to enrich city life across all of Malmö.
In 2013, Marge was invited to participate in a parallel commission exploring the design of the neighbourhood. The guiding principle is to honour Varvsstaden's exceptional cultural and historical heritage while layering in a new, living district — one where extensions and alterations add contemporary depth without eroding the character of the place. A strong emphasis is placed on reuse, with materials salvaged from buildings currently being dismantled forming a resource bank for future.
