Strand Care Home

Sustainable housing through thoughtful design

Commissioned by Tyresö Municipality, Marge has designed Strand Care Home in Tyresö Strand. The building accommodates ten residential care units, as well as staff areas, shared facilities, and spaces for daytime activities. The site is located adjacent to detached housing and green areas along Tyresövägen.

The building is composed of staggered volumes that together form a cohesive structure organised around two large internal courtyards. A central circulation spine between the courtyards connects the residential units, vertical circulation, and shared activity spaces. The enclosed courtyards provide protection from traffic noise while creating safe, legible outdoor environments for residents.

The scale is carefully adapted to the surrounding low-rise residential context, while ensuring good daylight conditions and sunlit courtyards. The courtyard façades are calm and unified, featuring generous balconies supported by arcades. Towards the surroundings, the volumes are broken down through shifts in plan and a varied roofscape combining pitched roofs and roof terraces.

Material choices draw on the local context and the cultural setting around Tyresö Castle. Red-brown brick, clay tile roofing, and timber elements in windows and entrances give the building a warm and welcoming character. The brick façades incorporate a subtle patterning effect through varied brick bonding and careful detailing. Balconies and the roof pavilion, executed in cross-laminated timber (CLT), introduce contrast and lightness towards the courtyards.
The care home is designed to feel safe and domestic, where both private apartments and shared spaces are treated as living environments. All apartments face the external façades, while their entrances open onto the social spaces of each unit, with views towards the green courtyards.
Internally, natural and durable materials are used, such as timber parquet flooring, oak panelling, and exposed timber columns. The colour palette is inspired by Prince Eugen’s paintings from Tyresö, featuring muted earth tones with more vibrant accents.
The building meets high sustainability standards, is designed to achieve Miljöbyggnad Gold certification, and incorporates a timber structural frame, rooftop solar panels, and durable material selections.
