Money On the Wall
"It is hardly an exaggeration to say that modern life in the West is fundamentally built around money, and the power and goods that money can buy. Few artists have wrestled with this fundamental fact as thoroughly and intensely as Warhol did. His art asks viewers to do the same." - Blake Gopnik
On behalf of the Spirits Museum, Marge Architects have given spatial form to the exhibition "Money on the Wall," curated by Blake Gopnik, an exploration through Andy Warhol's work with a focus on consumer society. In a rich collection featuring over 150 items, the exhibition highlights Warhol's concept of "Business Art," or as Warhol himself put it, "the step that comes after Art."
To accommodate the diverse collection in a small space, the exhibition is divided into nine sections, spanning from the 1950s to the present. Visitors can follow Warhol's career through documents, posters, photographs, projections, books, advertisements, films, and other objects, from his early works as an illustrator and textile designer to his enduring legacy today: how his heritage lives on and is managed in the works of contemporary artists.
The exhibition format breaks and shifts both scale, perspective, and timelines instead of following a traditionally linear structure. The tilted, space-creating walls create circular and overlapping flows that mirror the content of the exhibition. By bringing objects and walls close to the visitor at times, an unexpected intimacy between visitor and artwork is created.
