Competition proposal for a residential high rise in Varvsstaden
A deep understanding of Varvsstaden’s history, identity and future development has formed the basis of the proposal. The new high-rise takes its cues from the shipyard’s industrial heritage and the characteristic asymmetrical silhouettes of the Kockums crane and the harbour silos. A tactile podium takes its scale and materiality from the surrounding brick industrial buildings, with active frontages, arcades, flexible spaces and a community house. Its location between two key routes and adjacent to Solhöjdsparken provides strong opportunities to strengthen urban life and create movement and opportunities for people to meet throughout the day.
The structural concept combines timber, recycled steel and low-carbon concrete, reducing embodied carbon while responding to the demands of a high-rise structure. The façade of profiled recycled aluminium and integrated photovoltaic panels draws on the industrial character of the former shipyard, reinterpreted through contemporary construction.
